Sunrise Newbies (Convoy 3)

The ANIT trip published by Marshal Zak was so popular the group was split into 3 convoys. This trip report is for Convoy 3.
For our group we split the lead between myself and Ian, with the plan that I would lead for the first leg of the drive to Nagra and Ian would take over lead for the return leg, with Marshal Hadi monitoring convoy progress as we went.
With all members nearly on time (a few running a little late) and one no show we gathered round and went through the briefing and selected the convoy order which was:
Mr Magoo (Rob) **** Lead (Lead for 1st leg of drive)
Ianzki (Ian) **** 2nd Lead (Lead for 2nd leg of drive)
benjamin (benjamin)*
ClintonF (Clinton)*
Ghiasg (Ghias)**
Salimbinabu (Saleem)*
Genius (Janko)**
Nemo1986 (Nemanja)*
Learner (Firoz)*
adarsh4146 (Adarsh)*
Bassamoreo (Bassam)*** Sweep
Hadi77 (Hadi)***** our dear Marshal overseeing progress.
With radio checks complete we headed off into the dunes. The early part of the drive was quite slow and technical with slower paced car control being required.
We had plenty of small crests, climbs and small descents to negotiate, which was good practice, as we meandered through the dunes making good progress. Our progress was then a little impaired with a stuck vehicle that required two snatch straps joined together to provide a long enough rope to facilitate a slow and safe recovery. A little way further on we had a pop out that provided a good opportunity for us to all gather round to go through the steps of fixing the tyre back onto the bead.
We then crossed the gatch track and headed for Nagra where it was planned to meet our friends from the other 2 convoys. With only a few dune crests to go one of our team had a pop-out. With Nagra nearby, Ian took the main group onwards to Nagra while myself, Hadi and Bassem helped our team member fix the pop-out, before we also headed over the final few crests to meet our convoy who had found a nice spot to relax in the shade of some trees.
For the return leg of the drive, Ian took over as lead as I moved to 2nd lead, where Ian navigated us safely through the dunes back all the way to the same meeting-point we started from to end the drive.
To all the newbie drivers, very well done today. It was challenging in places, but you did well.
Keep it up.
Thanks also Janko and Ghias, our intermediate support. It was good to have you in the convoy.
Great support from our advance driver Bassam as Sweeper.
Ian – super job as 2nd lead and as lead part 2, and thanks Hadi for supporting everywhere in the convoy.
And special thanks to Zak for organizing this morning’s drives.
I hope to catch up with you all on future drives soon.
Rob.
