A motorist has been busted after tearing around Dubai in a souped-up 4x4 that had been altered to run on aircraft fuel.

It is illegal to modify a vehicle in the emirate without permission from transport authorities, but that did not stop the young Emirati from ramping up his SUV so that it could reach a staggering 350kph - the same speed as a Formula One car.

As well as being fitted with a tank of jet fuel, the 4x4 was also kitted out with a special computer and gas cylinders.

The driver was arrested by Dubai Traffic Police after they spotted him racing through the city at night and gave chase.

General Mohammad Saif Al Zafeen, head of Dubai Traffic Police, said: “The car was speeding like crazy and was a danger to other road users. It was also making a lot of noise and disturbing residents.”

He added: “The driver was racing against another vehicle.”

Al Zafeen said the wacky racer was first seen on Al Khawaneej Road, adding that the driver slowed down as he approached a roundabout and police tried to pull the car over.

However, Al Zafeen said the driver turned off his headlights and sped off.

Officers saw the vehicle pull into the driveway of a villa in Al Mizhar, where they arrested the driver.

“The owner of the villa was surprised, telling us he didn’t know the driver and hadn’t given him permission to come onto his property,” Al Zafeen said. “He asked us to take the vehicle away.”

The motorist claimed the modifications were worth Dhs250,000 but a garage in Dubai had done them for free. “The garage did it to attract customers,” said Al Zafeen.

The case has been referred to Dubai Traffic Prosecution. The fine for illegally modifying a car is Dhs400.

Wonder how many horsepower he got with it! If we had the modifications in the Club we could get sponsored by Etihad!

indeed ...
but if i add a jet engine to my car - i bet it will take another 2 years to work finally ... and then again no manual ...
besides that - it shouldn't stress the diffs a lot - so no need to get "atomic axles" or dana 80 ;)

“Wow, where to start. So who 'says' the 4X4 can reach 350? Police 'experts'? Jet fuel? Well, jet fuel is a cheaper dirtier version of diesel. Nothing more. If it was a diesel 4X4 sure. But why would you? Another example of the reasons the 7 days staff is writing for the 7 days, and not the Times, Daily News, NY Times, or really any respectable non-rag news paper.”

I think they have added spices to this news by not saying the whole truth or giving full details.

the way this news was delivered gives me the impression that the SUV is either a Nissan Patrol or a Toyota Land cruiser which are the favorite cars for turbo charging here in the GCC.

Now, if we look at the available SUV's in the market ( Porsche Cayenne Turbo , the Bi Turbo X5 & X6 , the Mercedes GL AMG ) we will find out that these cars are not real SUV's in the way we know.

These are meant to be fast and sporty .

any one can make a Nissan or a TLC with 1000bhp but to reach 350 km/h you need to start with something that is ready to handle that speed.

regarding the JET PLANE FUEL  I think the writer could have spent 2 minutes on Google to find out that it is called racing fuel and not JET PLANE FUEL as he claims.

a friend of mine have an x6 (heavily modified - around 700 bhp) and it crosses the quarter mile in around 9 seconds.

therefore, I think that it is easy to reach 350 km/h in an SUV like that :geek:

Cheap & Stupid Reporter

even that part is not correct ..... and this is the point of not telling the full story

I think the fine of modifying the engine is 400 dhs

the missing part shall be the black points for that ( I think 2 , Not sure )
impounding the car for 7 days for that

then for speeding he will get a 1000 dhs fine
12 if not 24 black points for his new SUV speed record
impounding the car for 30 to 60 days depending on the judge.
