Another import note for some of the newbies (and maybe others), please follow these steps:

1- Push the radio pedal Before starting to speak
2- Speak ; clearly, slowly, ~ 20 cm away from radio and make it Short and Simple
3- Release the pedal After you have said the last word

and a useful practice is not to use the radios for jokes and chit chats

One of the proplem while talking in the radio is the spelling of a word .. pronouncing leters (ex. B, C , D, E) may not be clear over radio or Phone .. People all over the world agreed to use the NATO Telephonic spelling code .. and here they are for your information

In addition please use your name and who you want to talk to.

It is very confusing when you have a large number of cars, and all you hear is "STUCK" or "I need some help"......

this can be done easily and with no confusion by calling the name (or better the nickname)of the receiver followed by the name of the sender;

1- "Andy" "Andy" "Barkil" (this is me calling andy)
then the sender waits for the reply of the receiver,( if he ddnt reply then he is not listening). then the call might go on like :

2- Yes Barkil (Andy confirming the reception)

3- I don't see the car behind me - can u help? (my message, short and simple)

4- I got it Barkil - thank you

So no more Music on Radios

A quick question.

I currently own a "Rino® 120" garmin walkie talkie

and was wondering if this model would still be able to 'connect' with the radios you guys are using ?

or should i get a radio from the "chairman of the board" as wasif said ?

The Garmin Rhino 130 is a FRS/GMRS capable radio/gps set. So yes, it will work. The key feature to pay attention to for these hand held radios used on the club trips is that it is capable of the US FCC Spec for FRS/GRMS allocation.

About 2 yrs ago when we returned from a trip from Oman I left my Motorola on the seat beside me. The custom officer at the border spotted that and immediately confiscated it saying that the use of these radios are illegal in the UAE. Are there models that are legal I wonder?

The same happened to my ans couple of friends. I can add that the detained us for more then 2 hours for having the radios.

I dont know much about the law but i think it is not illigal as long as u have a kind of permit or liscence to use it (and i think they lock some models to restrict them to few frequencies)

Any one has additional informaion please help????

as far as i know, radios (aka walkie talkies) are illegal in the UAE, but as long as the police don't actually see them, they can't search your car for it unless ofcourse it was reported that you are suspected of owning one and they get the 'go ahead' to search your car.

But this might only be in regards to radios that have scanners that can pick up police frequencies (i think most radios do that) .. so just try and not let anyone in a uniform see that you have one and it shouldn't be a problem .. and i guess seeing as almost everyone in this club has one, no one here is going to make you in trouble for owning one

I'm still wondering how Dragon Mart is able to bring them into the country ! 8O
