Found a great campsite for anyone looking to camp out in mussandam...it is at N 25deg 47.263' E 056deg 12.403', about 35 km after dibba.
start off in Dibba and head across the border into Oman at the checkpoint on the corniche, then follow signs for Khasab and head into wadi khab al shamis (i think that is the name of it). You will come to a t-junction in the road near a water tank, go right. Pass by a small village and then after a very very steep ascent, you will begin to descend gradually and you will pass some terraced fields and farms on your right about 30km after leaving dibba. then you will pass a flat area on your left with a large steel tank...keep going, all the time descending slightly, passing another flat clearing on your left with great views. the road will bend to the left and at this bend there is a very small track on your right hand side going downhill. this is the campsite with great views and best of all it has cool, humidity free weather!!! great for summer...if you pass a white farm house on your right then you have gone too far!!!
as far as i know it is not possible for expats to get passed the omani checkpoint at the bottom of the mountain for going to khasab but you can head into wadi bih. the uae checkpoint at the end of wadi bih is not open to expats, so basically you'll have to retrace your steps to dibba...
