UPDATE

After a week of driving I blew a core (freeze) plug and Frankie dropped its guts  . I had bought four stock plugs and the machine shop turned a fifth. Guess which one blew out..

Anyway, one new stock plug later and Frankie is back in action. It is really starting to loosen up and even though I am limiting rpm to below 3K, the engine pulls like a train. Have not given wide open throttle yet.

I am paranoid about sand ingress (I think this was the cause of the last engine failure) and have just bought a cheap snorkel from our friends in the East. I am also fitting a transmission fluid temp gauge to keep an eye on temperatures in the desert.

Yesterday was my first trip and the car performed admirably.

See you in the sand soon!

Dave

You could try putting a sock over the airbox snorkel to act as a pre-filter.
Glad to hear that Frankie came through his first test unscathed.

UPDATE

I am now 750km into my 1000km run in period.

The engine is really nice. I am staying below 3K rpm, but is still has bags of power. I still have not given it full throttle.

I think I have solved the issue of sand ingress into the engine - the stock filter is not the best fit with the stock air box!!!

I have now lined the box lid with some ACE draught excluder and that has stopped all ingress.

I would like people's opinions please.

As you know, I fabricated a cowl intake (3") - but I discovered a design fault. After a really good stuck, all the sand from the windscreen ran down into the cowl and was sucked into the filter box. A bit of a pain to vacuum out each trip...

So I have bought a Chinese snorkel which arrived yesterday.

I am now a little concerned that it might restrict airflow.

The current air box has a rectangular intake orifice of area 44 cm^2. Whereas the snorkel inside cross sectional area is 33 cm^2 (2.5") inside diameter.

Given my engine is 4.7L displacement - this might cause an issue. Any opinions before I cut a very big hole in my wing?

Dave
