My Prado automatically engages central difflock once I switch it to 4L.
Is it OK to drive on 4L during desert drives?
Does it damage the engine or transmission?

Is it not possible for you to engage central diff lock while in 4H?
Low range is OK to use, but may as well stay in high unless you actually need the added torque you get from low range - it will fun you more, make you a better driver.

Yes it is possible to engage central difflock on 4H.
So is it better to drive with central difflock engaged?

It makes power go equally to the front and rear axles. Definitely use it 100% of the time on the sand.
