Jeep Stroker 4,6 L Build up

Post by Chuck »

Hi Guys,

If you are a proud owner of a 4,0 L Jeep ( Wrangler, Cherokee, Grand Cherokee ) you are probably satisfied with the power of your engine already.
If not, you can get much more power out of your stock engine when you install a Stroker ( either as a ready made Kit or from Junkyard parts ). If you are planning to overhaul your engine anyway, why not build up a Stroker ?

What means Stroker ?

It means that you enlarge your engines stroke with another crankshaft ( commonly the 4,2 L Jeep 258 Crankshaft ) . With other pistons you increase the volume of your engine too. Stroker engines build out of the 4,0 L block and can range from 4,5 L to max 5,0 L .

Below you can see all the options ( datas are from Dr. Dino Savva' s Stroker website )

Thanks for introducing me to this site Uwe. Now that I'm registered, I can share some of my stroker experience and learn some more about strokers myself. Anyone who wants to copy my 4.6L stroker can go to:

http://www.angelfire.com/my/fan/stroker.html

I've been running my stroker since 1st July 2004. I built it when I was living in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The most essential part that you'll need to build a stroker is the Jeep 4.2L (AMC 258) crankshaft. You'll need to buy it from the USA and ship it in. When combined with the 3.875" bore of the 4.0L block, minimum displacement is 4516cc or 4.5L. Most guys overbore the cylinders by 0.020" or 0.030" to make it 4.6L.
If you also buy the Jeep 4.2L (AMC 258) connecting rods (also from the USA), you can use stock-type 4.0L pistons that you can buy locally. Alternatively you could use the longer 4.0L connecting rods (you have those already) but you'll need to order custom forged pistons (at least $600 per set of six) from the USA.
If you read my stroker pages, you'll have a better understanding of what I'm talking about.

man it sounds great , hmmm but i think the ready made would be the best thing for me because i know nothing about the stuff needed.

the 5.0L sounds really good , so how can i get a ready made one and how much would it cost me to get it and install it ???

u didn't face any problems from using it ??? it didn't have any effect on the car (engine and stuff) ??

Take a look at these ready built stroker long blocks:

CDP $3500
Golen $3500
Hesco from $3950
Titan Engines $2100

If you don't fancy paying such high prices to buy and ship a ready made engine, you can buy a stroker kit and have the engine built over here. These guys supply stroker kits:

Speedomotive
RPM Machine
Hesco

If you want to be sure that your stroker will be reliable, don't go above 4.7L. That's a 0.060" cylinder overbore with a standard AMC 258 crankshaft (not offset ground).
My own 4.6L stroker runs beautifully. I used Ford Racing 24lb/hr injectors and made my own MAP adjuster to alter the MAP sensor voltage input and fine tune the fuelling.

Thanks Chuck for that interesting info and for intreducting DinoStroker to the club as well.

Dino, Welcome to the club. Hope you will enjoy it and start a strocker bug over here. Please introduce your self on the special forum made for that and answer me with the required infor for our club register.

Now I was reading what you guys have wrote. I think I need to go to engineering school to understand what is the story.

I understood that I should buy a kit, take it to a special shop and after an agreed time I should have a car with more power. Is this the easy part of the story?

Now my easy questions:
- Give me ONE recommended option. Tell me go and buy this kit from this place and how much it will cost.
- Tell me where to install it (Also one highly recommended place) in UAE.
- Is it street legal? will it pass the Traffic test?
- Do I have to modify any thing else? like suspension, brakes, air system?
- Will I still keep my Borla Cat Back, Air Filter and Throttle body or those will be a throw away items?
- Any heating problem specially in the summer where the AC is on?

Thanks

Iguana, in general its like that.
If you want spent a lot of money, you have to buy a kit from Hesco or so. You have to find a local shop to assemble all this parts in a stock 4.0 L block.

I will do it the other way.
I bought an old block,

new oversized pistons

and,
i will use a crankshaft ( 258 ) which i bought from a friend in germany.
Image

So far the block is bored ( actually since today ) :D
Image

You also need a stock Throttle Body which is bored from 57 mm to 62 mm
Image

Street legal ? Nobody can see that you have a Stroker, because you have the stock engine block which looks just like any normal engine, but... you have more power. :D

Price for my Build up ? I think i can do it for under 9000 AED including everything. So far i spend 3345 AED for the parts ( Block with all parts - ( excluding the camshaft), but including the Pistons, Crankshaft ) I will keep you updated.

Thanks Chuck. As I told you earlier. I will wait till you finish it, try it and then give me a feed back. Please keep a full record of all the expenses OK.

Another question. What will I do with my existing Engine?

Iguana, you not must sell your engine to Kris ( for the Siams ) :D

If you do not need your Wrangler for about 2 weeks you can build up your Stroker with your existing engine. I choose to use an old engine because i need my Jeep for daily driving. Actually i could bought me a Kit from Hesco without any problems but i want to make it low cost, just to see if it works and also to have the fun out of going to that turning shops, talk to them, control the progress, and finally building it. I have also a reason why i do it the cheap way ( you remember what i told you that morning on phone) ?

Happy Jeepin
Uwe
