I am talking aboiut iPhone4 specifically and so far I still think it relies on 3G service provider for location services. Otherwise the GPS function should continue normally where the signal is not available which is not the case.
However, I coule be wrong so guys enlighten me Maybe there is some setting to be enabled or something !!!!!
The iphone4 does have GPS. the built in map app needs to contually download updated maps to work as it doesn't store anything in local memory. If iyou nstall an aftermarket software that have predownloaded maps then it will operate without network (yes, I have already tried this).
The problem with the iphones however is that they cannot withstand heat. So, they are useless offroad.

The heat problem is the direct sunlight on the back of the iphone... if you have a white one it might be much better - as well if you put something behind the iphone (piece of paper - whatever - so no direct sunlight can reach the back of the iphone) .

If you have motionX GPS go to setup -> maps download ... mark the area, put in the zoom level and there you go.
You can change the way of displaying the map by clicking on the arrow symbol between the + and - button.
