Newbies going Tilal Sweihan 27 December 2019

Post by petro »

The group met at the Sweihan Wedding Hall between 2:15 and about 2:45 when the last person arrived. From the wedding hall we assembled into a convoy and headed south of sweihan, taking one of the first exist to the west towards the Tilal sweihan area. We assembled our group here, deflated, and then checked for the proper gear, such as radios and flags. There was an ANIT participating so we Kamran helped out by providing the recovery gear for the ANIT demonstration. I went through the safety briefing and assembled the convoy order with a focus on keeping the Newest drivers at the front of the convoy.

The convoy order was:

1 petro
2 Kamran
3 Austin
4 xpantop
5 Mohammadawais82
6 ISLEEM
7 sultan
8 JoUAE2018
9 shameem
10 ntco
11 bisharbn
12 emad88
13 Tarikyamani
14 medhat
15 HR-EAGLE
16 Isham

Irfan, Fido DIdo, and Pharoah supported the group from the side, attending to any stucks and coaching on recovery. Sultan was participating as a newbie but has much experience participating in desert recovery and was involved in many recovery efforts as well.

After the briefing we headed out. It was my first time leading a newbie trip and I found it difficult at first reading the dunes to determine good routes for straight cresting obstacles. As most advanced drivers know, obstacles are most often the easiest to take by sidecresting or sideslopping, so choosing a good route with straight crests wasn’t something I was familiar with. After a while I got the hang of it and with minimal stucks the convoy moved into an area with larger dunes (and much bushes). We had our first few stucks on one of the first sharp 4 meter descent and some people got some practice with recoveries. We then took our first break in a large open area with a large dune behind. At the recommendation of the marshal we brought the convoy up to the high area behind the dune and practiced slipface decent by coming over the top of the dune and descending. The crest before the slipface had a large peak that cause a number of the drivers to get stuck, and so there was more recoveries practiced here. At this time the sun was getting low, and we had to restart the convoy before all of the group was able to practice the descent.

From this area we proceeded towards the Tilal sweihan area were all of the new newbies did very well with no stucks. Apparently as the sand was torn up ascending the straight crests, the drivers further back in the convoy were getting stuck in the soft sand. We were most of the way to the Tilal sweihan when the sun had descended and the sky was dark. We were close to the end time so we found a gatch road to take back to the end point.

At the end point we deflated and said goodbye, and those who wanted to stay enjoyed some fire, BBQ, and music.

Thank everyone who participated for coming and thank you Pharaoh, Fido Dido, Irfpk, Kamran and Isham for your support on this trip. It was much appreciated!
