Yeah, all that's probably the result of the engine standing around unused for several months before you transplanted it into your Jeep. It doesn't sound too serious though and you'll actually be better off now that the engine's being overhauled.
That should be a lesson to us all. If you find a complete engine in a junkyard and you haven't heard it running before you buy it, then it's probably a good idea to tear it down and freshen it up with new rings/bearings/seals plus any other worn parts.

well ... yes Junk Yard engines I wanted to avoid ... thats why I bought the whole car last september and drove it twice a week (without hitting the rev limiter though :lol: ) and changed the oil 6 months ago as well.
Everything was smooth as butter ... and my first 200-300 km with the engine inside the Jeep were NAICE as well.
Until I tried to check out higher rpm regions ... drove the Jeep in 2 on road until I hit 6000rpm and it shifted to 3, wanted to check something :twisted:
(yes the Jeep was warmed up! it was after a 15km trip!)
THEN it got this ring damage and the reality of the engine unveiled its "unmaintained" face by farting a huge cloud of smelly smoke!

I should be glad it was not during my first off road trial trip :ugeek:
And actually it still was in on road bug shake off mode ... so ... mission accomplished! (HOPEFULLY!) :lol:

Yeah, the piston rings must have been pretty gummed up as a result of the previous owner not changing the oil often enough. Was there any sludge inside the crankcase or the oil pan?

well ... I have a brand new GMPP LH8 oil pan under the crank ... so cannot tell (anymore) :lol:

EDIT: visited my engine yesterday ... all half as bad as it sounded!
the third "oilcontrol" rings are gummed ... but thats it. (complete re ringing planned!)
there is some residue ... but not THAT much ... all some brownish smokey layer which can be wiped away with a finger.
As everything is dissassembled it all will get professionally cleaned.

Block, crank, piston assemblies, camshaft, heads, all completely dissassembled ... bearings and shaft races all look good.
Cylinder bores look super smooth and clean ... out of round test will be performed at a machine shop.

Valveseats leak tested ...ok. Valvestem seals are going to get replaced anyway.
Head combustion chambers look clean ... much cleaner than the piston tops which have some black carbon layer on top :|

The previously used head gasket is the early design composite material which was swollen at all parts contacting the coolant. coolant passges restricted through swollen gasket material :roll:

A newer design multilayer steel head gasket is going to be used! :twisted:

Valve Springs will get replaced by Z06 (LS6) springs :twisted:

New oil pump! :twisted:

Cheap dino oil in tight higher performance engines plus water coolant are the culprit. A jeep 4.0 I6L tractor engine is much more forgiving!

All much better than buying a "surprise egg" of a "new" mussaffah engine :mrgreen: .

UPDATE:

- engine assembled and back in place! scary moment: first startup ... yes it started ... BUT ... sitll smoking and sounding like 7 cylinders instead of eight :dash1:
Easy solution ... (fortunately) ... they suddenly had the idea to check the injectors ... and #1 was pouring fuel continuously into the cylinder :roll: ... 10 minutes and a quick injector replacement later => aaallll smooth as butter :mrgreen:
The shop had the engine completely opened up because of my scary description ... all were suspecting the worst ... from broken rings to broken piston skirt ... well ... so now I have
- brand new piston rings (the old ones were REALLY in bad shape)
- new valve seals ... cheap add on
- new valve springs (C5 Z06 springs) ... less prone to breakage at higher rpms ... and the old ones were not the same length anymore
- new multilayer steel head gaskets ... the old one on paper compound base was really swollen around the coolant passages.
- new oil pump ... the residue traces were suggesting that.
aaannd
- last moment waterpump replacement because while reassembling the engine they discovered some coolant evaporation traces below the pulley ... unfortunately last moment meant I had to go with whatever Shatry had on stock ... some cheap US/Chinese aftermarket replacement :roll: (better a cheap non leaking pump than a leaking one NOW)
- and of course the real reason for the culprit in the first place : a "new" injector off the shelf of the workshop :evil: :cry: :roll: ... :mrgreen:

maybe I paid more than needed ... but all hopefully not wasted!
yesterday insurance renewed and some coolant added ... the system was still burping out.
today inshallah registration :|
tomorrow rear D44 bolton Super Truss (quite some torque there)

now my registration card for the TJ sluggy is carrying a GM V8 engine number .... hehehehe. Very rare !

EDIT:
I got the relevant remarks in my Test Report ... plus one more : "EVALUATE EVERY TEST", which means I cannot modify the existing configuration anymore AND they can change the regulations any time as well. :cry:

some background info re actual procedure:
- no frame mods allowed WHAT SO EVER! (not even a new bolt hole!)
- engine mounting must reuse original (OE) engine frame seats/horns, but not necessarily the OE isolators!
- a invoice from the conversion workshop is needed where the NEW ENGINE NUMBER is noted.
(my invoice had a "all parts approved" remark on it as well. Some workshops are "trusted/approved", like e.g. Al Yasi)
It seems there is some routine at Muroor to it now ;)

and:
I was warned that even if Muroor/Adnoc technically approves a mod it is NOT NECESSARILY PROTECTED AGAINST POLICE CAMPAIGNS and against other emirates spontaneous new rules (e.g. SHJ impounding ANY mod car)!
Next month another campaign in AD is expected ... :?
The AD campaign is targeted less against "noise" but more towards the more general "misuse" clause!
