Alas not. I have a constant P0302 code (misfire cyl 2) and I am trying to hunt down cause. Cylinders 1&2 have a reduced compression to 5/6/7/8. Wondering if I have a head gasket failure. Will swap injectors around tonight to see if code moves. Also plan to swap out coil rail, but junkyard does not have any (they sell like hot cakes).

Have a Viper 6 wire ignition pack on order from Shatri and will replace coil rail with pack/leads and see if that solves issue.

Otherwise its head off again. Although I am close to jacking the car.

What are the compression numbers, and what do the plugs look like?

Plugs all look same:

1 & 2 150 others 175-180

Dave

I am assuming because the coil rail fires twice and the corresponding cyl does not throw a code, the coil rail is good?

Just to be clear, the engine (at below 4k) goes well, and you would not know there is a misfire. It is just throwing the P0302 code.

P0302 code:

Misfire is detected by the crankshaft speed fluctuation (CSF) method. This method compares the engine speed difference between the cylinders in firing order. The speed is detected by the crankshaft position sensor. An RPM value is set for each cylinder for comparison. When an RPM difference of more than 10 RPM between the cylinders, a misfire count of 1 is recorded. The RPM can vary 1 to 10 RPM depending on engine load. Two types of misfires are detected, a two-trip misfire which is about 2% and results in an emission increase, or a one-trip misfire which is about 10% - 30% and will damage the catalytic converter.

Mine starts as a pending code and eventually sets the CEL.

I all have a high rpm/load issue which causes PCM to cut engine until restarted. Probably related.

Dave, my first thought is that if both no 1 & 2 cylinders are down on compression compared to the rest then the gasket has probably blown between them.

Dear AD4x4 Friends,

Frankenstein has moved on and it is time, after 43 pages, to close this thread.

I in no way regret buying this XJ – I have met so many people because of it and I now know Mussafah like the back of my hand.

I would like to thank everybody who has helped me along the way:
  • XOF – for selling it to me in the first place!
  • Chief and Mood for pulling it out of the biggest bowl in Liwa after having abandoned it overnight and countless others who have pulled me out of the desert.
  • Shadi for letting me steal his starter motor and then promptly losing it in the sand (we found it later)
  • WaqMaster and Triplod for driving me back to Frankenstein having abandoned it overnight after said starter motor failed.
  • Thom for staying with me after it refused to start (only to find out a fuse had blown)
  • Chafik and Dino for countless hours of technical advice.
  • BlackBird for general encouragement.
And so the list goes on – thanks to everyone.

Frankenstein has stayed within the club and I look forward to seeing it out and about.

Best Regards

David
