Thank You Marshal MATT for saving the day

Post by F16 »

just wanted to share a lovely example of " AD4x4 - being their when you need them" .

yesterday, Nassir & I went with a group of friends to practice side sloping in khazna area. We saw Matt at deflation point and he was going for private camping trip with his family.
During our trip, one of the cars got stuck on top of a large dune while attempting side cresting. We tried different ways to recover the car from a risky position as it was 70% tilted on the downside of dune. Matt saw us from a distance (as we were very high up) and came immediately to help. He adivised us to have one car Snatch Strap the stuck vehicle from above and the 2nd car pulls it down using the winch in order to straighten the car. The recovery operation was successfully completed under his leadership. Great learning experience for all ... Thank you Matt.

Pleasure to help you out! It was a complex recovery but thankfully all went well with no issues!

Plenty of learning points from this which are obvious! Please take care on private drives when attempting new skills - best learn these under the watchful eyes of the senior club members!

When I was first introduced to side cresting I did on occasion practice this skill on private drives but always on very low dunes. Even now I tend to avoid high side crests or even side slopes - although I'm fairly happy with my own techniques, things happen and people get stuck! If the most advanced driver on your trip gets stuck you need to be sure that the other drivers have enough skill to safely recover you - in this case the recovery was complicated involving two cars, one being used as a counterweight to prevent a rollover, and the second (unusually) being used as an anchor point - thank goodness for the weight of the Raptor!

My truck also had to be positioned very high up a slope which isn't easy. Finally, use of the winch in this case was unusual, being used to twist the stuck car around on the crest into a safe angle.

All in all a safe recovery - and a good series of lessons learned! Have fun and stay safe!
