Catch the Worm Trip Report

Post by Uristier »

I guess Amjad had a good sleep and a better dream. No show and no early morning call. So you can read what you missed.

I left Abu Dhabi with cool 28°C. During the deflation in the Sweihan dunes it was “less cold” with only 32°C.

The deflation point was chosen by Reto. He decided to “park” the car in soft sand. After 24 tires lost some air and the briefing we were ready to catch the worm.

Soon after the start Reto spotted a worm from the ridge of a dune, parked the car and run after the worm. We had to pull him off the dune because he insisted having seen the worm.

We continued floating over the dunes and every now and then one had to stop to search for a worm. This was obviously done because Edwin recommended looking out for worms early morning while the temperature was still “chilling” 32°C.

Thanks to a good pace we arrived at Ali’s Ghaf Tree Coffee shop at a good time and stopped for a short break.

Right after the break Janus volunteered in demonstrating a “slip face pop out”. Well this resulted in a wheel change.

The next fun was a somehow higher dune. It was used as a chance to exercise the best way to climb a dune.

The next stop was the “big dune” for satisfying the play instinct and to get some experience. Well done everybody.

After the play session, the floating continued towards civilisation. Once in a while a worm was spotted and the convoy stopped for a search.

We finally reached civilisation, the temperature was pleasant 46°C and I spotted a “pop” on a front tire. A “pop” is a tire pushed off the rim but no air is released.

Thanks to Triplod, Imad and Edwin for the hard work.
Thanks to SR42 for the second lead and

Janos I have a recommendation for you: Do not ignore Miss Gravity! She may get angry and to tell you that she will pull you down the dune.

I enjoyed the drive with you despite you never showed a worm to me.

Thanks Urs, great trip (as usual). Thanks for letting me practice some recoveries while others were spotting worms. Nice group of people and with only 6 of us we managed to keep a good pace with a nice variety of driving and fun. See you all next time.

The deflation point was chosen by Reto.
It was the most beautiful spot around ;-)
We had to pull him off the dune because he insisted having seen the worm.
There was ... Does anyone knows the book of Frank Herbert and the movie 'Dune'?

Thanks Urs for the early morning wake up call to the desert. Enjoyed the cool weather and the fresh taste of sand for breakfast ( This during one of the stops for the worm) Good to catch up with some old and some new faces.

Regards Triplod
